Third grade students are working on landscapes using glue and chalk pastels:

Third grade "Expressionism" Self Portraits and Kindergarten Diggers and Dump Trucks

The third graders really enjoyed discovering the different colors they could mix with the primary colors.  After we finished painting the self portraits, the students participated in a "positive feedback" critique.

The kindergarten students used found objects to create shapes for dump trucks, excavators and other construction vehicles:

Color Wheel Fish and Geometric Shape Robots

Second grade students learned about the color wheel and mixed secondary colors with red, yellow, and blue.  After the fish were painted, they used blue and white to create a tint of blue for the water.  The last step will be to use black markers to create patterns on each fish.

The first grade students recently finished discussing and identifying geometric shapes.  After dancing to the robot song, students created a geometric shape robot with scraps of paper.  The robots were finished with markers.

Celebrate the New School Year!!

Welcome back to a new school year!  Art class is in full swing.  Please wear older clothes or bring a smock to art class.  We will be doing lots of painting and using other messy mediums. 

Second grade students are beginning a primary and secondary color fish painting.  We began with a color wheel review.  Oval templates were used to create the fish.  The next class will be devoted to mixing paint colors to create secondary colors (orange, purple, and green).  I will feature some of the finished paintings in the coming weeks.

The kindergarten classes are learning about the primary colors.  We read "Mouse Paint" by Ellen Stohl Walsh.  Students used large oval templates to create three "mice".  The children created their mice by adding ears, nose, eyes, and whiskers.

The first fifth grade project is also dealing with color mixing.  We are incorporating language arts and visual arts by writing "Self portrait poems" using adjectives to describe ourselves.  After creating movement on the paper using curved lines, students will paint each area with a custom color.  When the paint is dried, the poem will be written into the spaces allowing the letters to change sizes to fill in each section.

Fifth graders are still creating masks.  Students have to work together to make sure that the masks are sturdy and formed correctly on each person's face.

 These kindergartners had some extra time after their art project, so they had some time to draw together!

The first grade students worked on warm color leaf prints.  After printing the leaves with the white paint, students used sponges to create colors in the background.

This is my first entry for the 2012-2013 school year.  The children have been busy creating lots of artwork since the school year began.  I had to post these adorable pictures of my preschool students showing their paintings proudly.  They learned about primary colors and secondary colors when creating these "blotter" bugs.  I borrowed this lesson idea from a fellow art teacher, Katherine Ludlow.  The children had a lot of fun finding out what the colors made when they were mixed together.  I had them use oil pastels to draw the legs, eyes and wings for their insects.  The next step will be to cut them out and paste them to a background.
